That is a GREAT lesson in life, that we actually hinder our children when we do TOO much for them. It stunts their development, their learning, their growing. We have been able to apply many life lessons to this season in our lives and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I have just met a wonderful woman who's family has done the same thing you are talking about, having Mama cows instead of buying milk replacer. They have Brown Swiss and it has been very successful, their children love it. It's so interesting how God brings people together, we are now dear friends and so are our children.

Thank you for sharing your time to comment, it is good to hear what and how everyone else is doing too!!

Blessings,
SharonSharonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17266816805551915978noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1901352933618729952.post-89287222067637943552012-12-27T21:47:48.601-06:002012-12-27T21:47:48.601-06:00I enjoyed reading your story. There is so much to...I enjoyed reading your story. There is so much to learn from animals, isn't there...how to make them learn to work and not take the easy way as it can harm them, but to use patience...almost a lot like child training. :) We raise calves to steers, but we've never had them born here yet. However, we just purchased our first five heifers as we are looking to go toward raising them from their moms as grassfed cows. We've had so many problems with the ones we've bought that were raised on milk-replacer...scours, pink eye, pneumonia...so we are hoping and praying they will be better to raise on mom's milk instead of the replacer. Our children are excited that we'll be able to keep the moms as they tend to get attached to the cows and then we have had to sell them for meat, so I think this way of raising them will be better all the way around. We don't have Highlanders; we have a mix of several different varieties, but I do love having cows. We've kept them right from when we first married 14 years ago. We have struggled to keep some of ours alive, and lost quite a few, so it is great to hear of your success story! It's neat to see him walking around now. :) It's hard not to invest time/money/energy into your animals...they are a part of your life and your investment for the future. God bless! What a tough decision to rehab this precious calf. What an inspiring story. I HAD to read this from the Barn-hop, having gone through a (much, much, much less drastic) healing of my best hen from an unsuccessful hawk attack (that I also posted on the hop). We too have cougars in the hills of the Cascades and it terrifies me to hear when folks have spotted the one that includes our area as part of it's territory. I can handle the birds of prey, coyotes, bears and bobcats but the cougars - no thanks. May God return the blessings to you of all the hard work and faithful care you have given to His creation.daniellehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12377439661566408120noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1901352933618729952.post-91476381144673824882012-12-10T13:01:25.689-06:002012-12-10T13:01:25.689-06:00Wow! We have Scottish Highlands also and just love them! 3 days ago, we had to assist a very small cow with her first LIVE calf. Last year, her calf was large also and we were not there in time and she lost it. This year however, we were there and when only one hoof was presenting, my husband reached in to find the other hoof twisted and off to the side. He pulled it out & we had to tie ropes around the calf's front legs to pull him out. He was a BIG calf, but he and his momma are both doing fine now! Thank God for His answers to our prayers! You can see our calves on our blog at moptopacres.blogspot.com
Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09879859667298607219noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1901352933618729952.post-91868349113648355782012-12-01T07:04:36.326-06:002012-12-01T07:04:36.326-06:00That was a great story, it show that patience and ...That was a great story, it show that patience and never giving up and trusting in God.
